Scouts FLY to Earn Science Badge

badge_borderScouts & their troop leaders are filling up our vertical wind tunnels right across Australia – All in the name of science!

A troop of 32 Scouts from the 1st South Penrith Scout Group recently earned their Science Proficiency Badges at iFLY Downunder (Sydney West), as well as experienced the thrill of indoor skydiving.

The Scouts attended a lesson and observed wind-tunnel experiments delivered by iFLY Educator Thea O’Conor, which was tailored to meet all the requirements for the group to be awarded their Science Proficiency Badge.

theaScout troop Leader, Fiona Sherwin, said that “The experience was incredible, the Scouts were so thrilled to be able to get a badge out of doing iFLY [Indoor Skydiving].”

“For some Scouts, this was their first badge, but what was exciting was at our next parade evening, having so many scouts receiving badges all at once. There is so much pride around the scout hall, especially since our Scout Troop is large and we have Scouts with Autism who were able to participate in iFLY [Indoor Skydiving], plus the staff were just fantastic!” – Fiona Sherwin.

“I’ve been telling other Scout groups already what an amazing experience iFLY is. I even told everyone about it at the recent monthly Penrith district scout leaders’ meeting” Fiona exclaimed.

Scouts using indoor skydiving as an experience to advance young members is a national phenomenon! A troop of 38 Scouts also visited our Gold Coast facility all in the name of achieving their next badge!

The leader of the pack, known by the kids as ‘Dung Beetle’, was stoked to be able to experience the adrenaline rush of indoor skydiving as the troop head.

Meet Sarah Yates, iFLY Gold Coast’s Sponsored Athlete

iFLY Gold Coast is proud to be sponsoring, 13-year-old, indoor skydiving athlete, Sarah Yates!

17634371_1828785010720226_8729983135754464052_nSarah had her first taste of indoor skydiving at iFLY Downunder (Sydney West) in 2013 which sparked her love of FLYING! When Indoor Skydive Australia Group announced that a facility would be opening in Sarah’s home turf on the Gold Coast, Sarah couldn’t wait to get back in the wind and follow her passion for flying.

All it took was an iFLY Fast Track course before Sarah joined the Junior iFLYER Club, and from there, quickly progress to being coached by iFLY Instructor, Matt Boag.

August 2016 saw Sarah competing in the Australian National Indoor Skydiving Championships at iFLY Downunder (Sydney West), where she came 4th in the Junior Freestyle competition after only six months of training! At the same competition, Sarah teamed up with Amy Watson, 11 year old junior indoor skydiving champion from Sydney, with the pair competing together in Two Way VFS (Vertical Formation Skydiving). The girls had loads of fun flying together and took out the trophy for “People’s Choice Award”.

In December 2016, Sarah went to compete in the Battle of the Blades competition in Seattle USA, where she also placed 4th in the Junior Freestyle. She teamed up with a Seattle local flyer, Huntar McKim, and competed again in the Two Way VFS against adults, again coming in 4th – a fantastic achievement for someone so new to the sport.

Sarah has quite an inspiring story, suffering from a medical condition known as CRMO (Chronic Recurrent Multifocal Osteomyelitis) which involves painful inflammation in the bones and can limit her from certain activities. Indoor skydiving has been a fantastic exercise program and sport for her as it is gentle on her joints. Sarah said she loves flying because it gives her a sense of freedom.

Check out Sarah’s interview from Queensland Weekender’s Liz Cantor, during their visit to iFLY Gold Coast.

Sarah is determined to improve her placings in each competition she enters and dreams of being able to compete in more international competitions in the future.

Along with her love of indoor skydiving, Sarah also loves to sing, act and has appeared in several TV commercials, short films, television series and even music videos!

We look forward to seeing Sarah continually progress with this fantastic sport and will be cheering her along every step of the way.

Soldier On Visits iFLY Downunder

iFLY Downunder recently opened its doors for an event aimed to support the Australian charity organisation, Soldier On, whose mission is to assist ex-servicemen/servicewomen and their families reintegrate into civilian life.

adrian_whitbyThe day hosted at iFLY Downunder (Sydney West), gave servicemen and women the opportunity to enjoy indoor skydiving along with their families. These events are vital as it gives former teams a chance to re-connect with old friends with an emphasis on community building.

“I was fortunate to run into several people that I had worked with previously and it was nice to see that they were doing ok.” – Soldier On flyer

Everyone, kids and partners included, boldly stated they had a fantastic time trying something new while sparking up some old and new yarns.

“I have never been skydiving before. The challenge of doing something different, and doing an activity that takes me outside my comfort zone with other veterans is so vital to maintaining my mental, physical, and social wellbeing.” – ex-serviceman

Thousands of those serving will be affected either physically or psychologically by their time in service.

Robyn McLachlantext“[Indoor skydiving] makes me want to try things I have been ‘putting off’ in the false belief that I cannot do them.” – Flyer on the night

These events are crucial to support veterans & their families but sadly cannot happen without companies taking an active role to help the cause.

The main benefit that indoor skydiving has is that boost in confidence it gives, either inside the wind tunnel or in everyday life.

“Get amongst it!!! Don’t hesitate for a moment or think you can’t do it even if you’re afraid of heights it’s AhhMazing!” – Soldier On flyer

Helping our wounded warriors has always been a cause close to the heart of Indoor Skydive Australia Group, who own and operate iFLY’s in Sydney, Gold Coast & Perth.  Founders Wayne Jones and Danny Hogan are both veterans having served on multiple operations.

“After serving in the Military for over 20 years, it is important to remain connected through events like the one being held by Soldier On” said ISA Group CEO, Wayne Jones.

Nikola Turnbulltext“Organisations that help support returned veterans are vital and it is an honour to be able to contribute in this small way”.  Indoor Skydive Australia Group Ltd listed on the ASX in 2013 under the code ASX:IDZ.

iFLY looks forward to hosting similar events for Soldier On in future.

Soldier On offers assistance is open to anyone who has served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, Australian Federal Police or the Department of Immigration and Border Protection and are having difficulty adjusting.

Pros And Cons Of Tunnel Flying

Written by Tunnel and Outdoor skydiver – Garnett Znidaric   (E414 – 1,400 jumps – 12 hours of tunnel)

Garnett_Znidaric4“Write a blog,” he said.

“It will be easy,” he said.

“What about?” I said.

“Why you like the tunnel,” he said.

“Hmm… okay,” I said

I have been a tunnel fan since I first saw the pictures back in the 80’s. On the other hand, I didn’t get to play in a tunnel until 2012. That was when I found out that a lot of the stuff we were teaching as B-Rel coaches back in the 80’s didn’t really work.

Since then I have flown in tunnels in Malaysia, Singapore, Eloy and of course, Sydney. Not as much as I like but enough to tell budding skydivers that it is the place to polish existing skills and develop new ones. Let me be clear though, I just do belly stuff although I have unenjoyable dabbled with the dark side of free flying.

It has often been said that knowledge you take from the sky won’t do much for you in the tunnel but what you learn in the tunnel will help you immensely in the sky. For the most part, I would emphatically agree. Here are some thoughts

Pros

-Cheap skydives-

Shared between 4 people a minute of freefall in the tunnel costs less than $10 each. Even 2 ways are an economic way of flying and when you are starting out

-No slipping and sliding-

The wall of the tunnel is unforgiving so you quickly learn whether or not you are flying sideways or backsliding. Often instructors will encourage people who have just completed their AFF course to start on their B Certificate relative work jumps. Personally, and I am not an instructor but rather someone who has watched people evolve in all aspects of skydiving for a number of decades, I would suggest that people after they complete their AFF they go straight to the tunnel and work on their basic body flight and B-Rels in the tunnel. If you still have jump numbers to build up for the A Certificate, then put the effort into canopy control as this is often the weakest skill and yet at many drop zones, a most critical one to develop due to high levels of canopy traffic.

-Time to breathe-

One great thing in the tunnel is that if you feel stress building up, as you go through drills or developing freefall comfort, you can simply stop and take the time to breathe. I can remember being in a rush to prepare for an overseas trip and I was rushing and flying far from well. Without having to worry about breakoff, spending height, I just stopped, looked across at the tunnel buddy, smiled and breathed deeply. Recommencing the routine, the docks were soother and faster.

-No climb to height or packing-

At the tunnel, the focus is all about the freefall at a terminal. This means you don’t have to worry about the ride up in the plane, canopy flight and packing. One minute of freefall can be followed by another one instantly. To me, this means that a lot of stress is removed and I and my colleagues in the tunnel can focus on flying.

-Instant debrief-

And once you get out of the tunnel, more than likely the video clip of your session is coming up on the screen in the antechamber to show you what happened. Sometimes from the side and sometimes from above. This is invaluable in identifying strengths and weaknesses and honing new skills.

Cons

-Using wrong references-

The only real negative I have seen people fall into the habit of is using a reference outside of the group. While it is imperative that you get used to accurate height control and stay around the middle of the doorway about a meter above the net, it is also important that you use the other members of your belly team as a reference for outward facing positions in formations. In the sky, there are no such references as the wall or doorways.

-Walls hurt. Be honest to tunnel supervisors-

Not really a point against tunnels but rather a caution to new skydivers entering the tunnel for the first time either by themselves or to join a group. Always be honest with your organiser and the people at the tunnel about your level of experience. This way you can be helped through your progression. The sky is very forgiving in many ways. The walls of the tunnel are not. On the other hand, if you can sit still in the tunnel, then you will know you are not the one backsliding in the sky.

Exercises

-Work on smooth NOT complex-

If you haven’t done burble hops as two ways, don’t take a four way in there and expect to turn blocks involving crossovers and expect them to work. Often I have seen inexperienced groups of four in the tunnel trying some fun stuff but with inappropriate skill sets the result has been lots of hitting walls and bouncing off the net to the disgust and frustration of the person on the door of the tunnel.

-Stop and smile-

Having learnt that slow is smooth and smooth is fast, a great exercise in the tunnel is to go through your formation stuff but stop before you take the dock and wait for the person keying the moves to give the key. In this way you slow down, stop rushing and become aware of those around you.

And smile. This is meant to be fun. Also being relaxed allows for you to feel more comfortable in the air. To be relaxed and enjoy every second of being in the wind.

In Summary

The tunnel is fun and great place to learn new stuff and polish existing skills. For the most part, I have never heard a valid argument for not going to the tunnel to learn in preference to learning in the sky. A couple of hours a year in the tunnel will pay huge dividends in the sky. And you can have fun while you are learning.  – Garnett Znidaric

Tourism Australia Famil Visits iFLY Gold Coast

Attraction passes with flying colours!

FullSizeRender2Whether ‘flying’ an event off to a thrilling start, or leaving a group buzzing after a grand finale; indoor ‘skydiving’ with iFLY Gold Coast will deliver the required effect.

Even the non-participating spectators will be buzzing, as a rule, not just the actual ‘flyers’ as they defy gravity and probably their beating hearts as they leap into the big vertical wind tunnel and soar aloft. All ‘flyers’ are geared up in special flying suits and goggles and take turns in the big wind tunnel as instructors instruct, encourage and ensure their safety. It’s all about the experience of skydiving without the need to actually leap out of a plane; just a ‘leap of faith’ into the enclosed but see-through vertical tunnel.

IMG_0730Williment Travel Group’s Anna Guy, who experienced iFLY on a recent Tourism Australia famil, says of all the activities on the action-packed tour the indoor skydiving took the honours.

“We were terrified and ecstatic all at the same time and I will never forget the buzz that it left. This is a must for any event.”

The iFLY team are well versed in managing groups, specialising in team building and corporate programmes. Photos and videos, along with a private room for an ‘after-flying’ function, can all be part of the package.

SAVE THE DATE! 2017 Aussie Indoor Champs!

180830_ifly_2016_offline_2.mp4.00_00_46_20.Still019Indoor Skydiving Group Australia (ISAG) have now released the highly anticipated dates for the 3rd annual Australian Indoor Skydiving Championships.

Hosted at the ISAG’s flagship facility, iFLY Downunder (Sydney West), the championships will be held over two days on the 18th and 19th August.

‘Our 2016 Championships were huge!’ comments ISA Group’s Chief Marketing Officer, Brett Sheridan. ‘We had more teams, more individuals and more age groups enter than ever before, it is evident that indoor skydiving is fast becoming an incredibly popular sport for Australians’. The 2016 event had 163 individual competitors registered, making up 73 teams for 10 categories.  This year we anticipate an even bigger turnout with an increased number of categories and the competition spread over 2 days.

The Australian Indoor Skydiving Championships are free for the public to attend.

‘Our Championship is open to the public to come along and check out’ continues Sheridan ‘but I recommend people get in early, last year we were a packed house!’

180830_ifly_2016_offline_2.mp4.00_02_59_08.Still010

iFLY Indoor Skydiving has been expanding rapidly across the country with locations now open in Penrith, Perth and the Gold Coast with more venues around the country set to open soon.

‘We have been overwhelmed with how indoor skydiving has been accepted by Australians,’ comments Brett.

Indoor Skydiving was originally used for skydivers and the military to practice stunts and skills in any weather and in a safe environment, however, over the years, it has transitioned into being a competitive sport internationally.

‘It’s such a unique sport and I think that’s what captivates people. You can improve to the point where it feels like you literally defy gravity and the more people become engaged in it, the more addicted they get!’ continues Sheridan.

180830_ifly_2016_offline_2.mp4.00_04_59_16.Still018Indoor skydiving has fast become the most popular choice amongst kids and parents looking for an alternative to the typical sport or hobby, and ISA Group is impressed at how many kids have taken it up as a competitive outlet. The 2016 championships saw 11 kids entered into the Junior Freestyle event, with 2 of the competitors later that year competing internationally in Poland and Seattle.

‘We expect Indoor Skydiving to continue thriving because of its cross-generational appeal,’ says Sheridan. ‘We have teams and flyers that range from ages 3 years to 60 years, from beginners to advanced. Indoor Skydiving is a sport that is incredibly fun to watch with the flyers fast choreographed movements, we are more than sure it will stay very popular.’

The Australian Indoor Skydiving Championships will be held at iFLY Downunder located at 123 Mulgoa Road, Penrith.  Further information and registrations will be available at www.ifly.com.au/australianchampionships

The Frequent iFLYER Programme

New benefits for those who love to fly!

2017 saw the release of a brand new customer loyalty and rewards programme being rolled out across all Australian ISA Group owned wind tunnels, including iFLY Downunder, iFLY Perth and iFLY Gold Coast.

The programme embodies the spirit of what it is to be a true Frequent iFLYER.

Kieren James, architect of the scheme and National FIF Programme Coordinator says;

“We looked at a variety of ways to design a new loyalty scheme, but ultimately we wanted to recognise those who fly with us regularly and keep the community and atmosphere going above all else.  These are our true Frequent iFLYERS”

The new programme is designed to provide real rewards that people value;

“it’s simple really – the more you fly, the more benefits you receive, and the core benefit is what everyone told us they wanted… free tunnel time”, says Kieren; “anyone can earn up to 90mins free flight time per year”

The programme works very much like an airline programme.  Every time you fly (qualifying block time), your Frequent iFLYER time accumulates and you progress through status tiers from Bronze to Silver, Gold and Platinum, with incremental benefits at each tier.  Enrollment is automatic and the first status level of Bronze is awarded at just 60 minutes of block time flown.

ISA Group are proud to pioneer this type of programme in the wind tunnel industry.
“We didn’t see anyone else doing anything like this” says Kieren.
“Some other tunnels offered discounts or club memberships, but none truly rewarded their customers on an ongoing basis the way this programme does.”

Since launching the new programme at the start of the year, there were over 850 FIF members within 8 weeks, and at this point over 1000! Many have already reached the top status tier of Platinum!

When asked about what’s in store for the future, Kieren responded “Well, we’re just getting started actually.  I can’t let all the secrets out but I can say that the programme gets better and better.  The people who achieve and retain the higher status levels are soon going to find out all about that”.

For full details of the programme, visit the Frequent iFLYER page
